For over 50 years, the Carleton College Rugby Football Club has thrived under student leadership,
retaining high standards of sportsmanship, ethical behavior and fair play. The club’s charter was built on
a platform of teamwork, understanding, co-operation, bringing honor to Carleton and respect for fellow
participants. Both men’s and women’s teams have enjoyed significant participation numbers and
competitive success, including a Division III national title and multiple tournament and regional
championships. Alumni of the program have gone on to play and coach for nationally-ranked clubs,
regional select sides, and World Cup teams.

Founded in 1978 by student Pixie Newman as the first women’s college rugby club in Minnesota, the team has achieved two national championship appearances, winning the NCAA Division III title in 2011, and maintained a legacy of strong team camaraderie.
Accommodating women of all sizes and skills, the team is comprised of everyone from the most serious of varsity and national athletes, to women just looking for something new and fun to try.

One of the largest club sports at Carleton, Men’s Rugby provides a chance for Carleton men to become proficient at rugby football and compete against teams in Minnesota and the region. The first college rugby team to be founded in the state of Minnesota in 1968, we host annual alumni gatherings and matches to carry on that legacy. We’ve collected countless tournament wins in our 50+ years, contributing to a tradition of excellence which has produced USA Eagles, Division 1 college rugby coaches, and renowned rugby sirs.
